Products & Sizing FAQs
Measuring involves checking the length and width of your feet and is used as a starting point to determine the size of shoe needed. Measuring is half of the process of finding a well-fitting shoe and should be done in conjunction with fitting.
Fitting involves trying on a shoe and checking it’s the right size and shape. In a Clarks Store, fitting includes measuring the foot to get a good idea of the size before the fitting process. Clarks checks six points of fitting to find the most comfortable fit.
Book a Kids' Fitting in one of our Clarks Stores or measure and fit at home using our measuring gauge and fitting instructions. See our Kids’ Fitting section for more information.
Measuring your child's feet at home using one of our foot measuring gauges is a good starting point to finding out your child's Clarks shoe size.
However, the styling, construction or materials of individual styles can affect the fit.
For the most accurate measurement of your child's feet, help choosing a style and a full fit check we would always recommend visiting one of our trained fitters in store.
Measuring and fitting shoes can be tricky as the style and material of the shoe can change the way it fits the foot. We recommend taking your child and the new shoes to a Clarks store where a trained fitter can determine the correct size for the style you want, and exchange any unworn shoes for you.

If a store visit is not convenient, you can return unworn shoes in their original packaging within 30 days for a refund. How to make a Return
If there is more than a 10mm difference between the length of your child's feet we would recommend visiting your local Clarks Store where we can offer our Odd Shoe Scheme. Instead of having to buy two pairs, you can have one pair to fit both feet.
There's a surcharge for this service, 25% for children and 50% for adults on top of the usual shoe price. It is recommended that both shoes should be tried on for suitability and advice taken from the staff before purchasing. For further information please contact your local store or Contact Us.

A large part of shoe maintenance is making sure your footwear fits. Too small means they may overstretch as you wear them, and too big may cause creases on the upper, over time. Our Clarks Stores sell a range of shoe care that can be used to clean your shoes or protect them from the weather and general wear and tear, along with leather softeners and polishes that will extend the life of your shoes. Wearing correctly fitting shoes is good for both your foothealth and the lifespan of your shoes.
Shoes that are too big may cause us to walk awkwardly, and can cause creases to form in the shoe's material making them look old prematurely. Shoes that are too large may also lead to shoes rubbing or causing you to curl your toes to ‘grip’ the shoes, which can lead to aching feet and other longer-term foot health issues.
Shoes that are too small can be uncomfortable as they restrict movement of the foot, and may cause a number of foot health concerns such as blisters or bunions. The shoe can stretch or become damaged, causing accelerated wear and tear.
For children whose feet are not fully formed, their bones can be manipulated easily so prolonged time in a shoe that is too small can impact how the foot develops. This is why Clarks shoes have built in growing room to encourage natural foot and walking development.
For further information we recommend visiting a Clarks Store where our trained staff can advise you on your size, the most comfortable fit in your favourite style and how to check that your shoes fit well.

Yes, our trained fitters are able to find a quiet space in the store for children who find busy spaces uncomfortable. Some stores are able to hold special quiet evenings, or do fittings outside of normal hours to cater for specific needs. In the same way as clothes size can vary based upon the style and fit of the garment, our shoe size can vary depending on the way in which the shoe is manufactured, as well as the shape of the shoe and the material used.
Size can also vary depending on the temperature of your feet; in the summer you may buy a slightly larger size because your feet are hot and increase in size ever so slightly.
The thickness of your child’s socks can also have an impact on how shoes fit/the size you end up with - it is encouraged that your child is measured and fitted with socks on with all our products, however if you do have a pair of shoes fitted without socks we encourage you to try shoes on at home with socks on to ensure your child has a comfortable fit.
It’s not the end of the world! Wearing the wrong size for a short period of time will not cause any lasting damage to children’s feet, or their growth and development.

If your child has orthotics we would recommend that you visit your local Clarks store for further advice.
No, the size selection will be made based on the babies age. There are some simple checks to ensure the styles are a good fit.
- The shoes should go on the feet easily without any obvious restriction.
- There should be at least 10mm of space in front of the toes for them to wriggle and grow.
- There should be a good ripple of material across the top of the foot with no restriction at the instep.
- The shoe should stay on the foot if you gently tug it.
