.....with these size 13 H shoes. My 5 year old has had absolutely no problems with the fit and can easily put them on and take them off himself. He's happy, they look smart and I've no doubt they'll serve him well through the coming months.

I too bought these shoes for my sons 1st time at school. Again I found the trim around the ankle wore off very quickley and the toe scuffed within a few weeks so the fabric shows through and are not waterproof any more. I do polish them every day. I am very disappointed with the quality and did expect better from Clarks. Feedback from Clarks: We’re sorry to hear you’re unhappy with your purchase. Please return to one of our stores with proof of purchase so the manager can look into it for you. We will happily refund or replace any items deemed as faulty.

  • 3 stars out of 5Totally agree with Jennifer from Wigan!

My son has had the same style shoe before, it fits him well and I do find the shoe easy to clean and polish. I have to say that the quality of the shoe this year was inferior. I discovered that after a couple of days the trim around the ankle was now 'manmade' and peeled straight away which had never happened with the previous shoes of the same design. I do hope Clarks take this feedback onboard and revert back to an all leather upper. Feedback from Clarks: Thanks for your comments, we value all our customer feedback so thank you for your comments which have been fed back to our team.

  • 4 stars out of 5These shoes have been great for my H fit son

I bought these for my very active 5-year old as his first school shoes in September. They have worn really well. I was concerned about the risk of scuffing at the toes, but as long as you use a good quality polish this can be minimized. He has worn them to school every day and frequently to play out in after school. I would especially recommend them if your child has wide feet.

Bought these for our son's first year at school and they've lasted the whole year. Polish up really well even after very tough treatment. No problems with the fabric wearing around the ankle. Fully intend to buy the exact same style again for this year as can't fault them. Very pleased. Great value for money. Thank you Clarks.

  • 4 stars out of 5Sturdy but scuff easily

    Nicola from daventry

These shoes look very smart when on but within two days of wearing them at school my 5 year old had scuffed the toes. They arrive home with toe scuffs each evening and I polish then once a week, once polished they regain their original smart look but I am not sure how long this will continue in the toe area - we have had them 6 weeks. So far the shoes have proved to be comfortable (we liked the padded heel detail), sturdy and waterproof - just need to be a little more scuff proof on the toe.

  • 3 stars out of 5Scuffed easily and looked a mess but lasted quite a long time.

    Maria from bristol

This is the usual style that my son has for school. He was 7 when we bought them . Really disappointed that they scuffed so easily (within days) on the toes. We had to polish them every night because it was too embarressing to send him to school in that condition. They became indented and eventually split at the front and we had to force our son to accept he needed new shoes. He found them comfortable to wear . I believe the daily polishing prolonged their life for about 9 months. Feedback from Clarks: Thank you for getting in touch. It’s difficult to know why some children’s shoes scuff more readily than others, however, we all use our feet in different ways and this will have an impact in the type of wear they receive. We do recommend shoe care items that help reduce the appearance of scuffs and scrapes. If you go into one of our stores, they will be more than happy to advise you on our products that should help.

I purchased these for my Grandson for school as I know how important it is for children to have good-fitting shoes in the place they spend most of their time. Very pleased as these shoes are smarter and lighter than the ones from the local supermarket. My Clarks shop did not have these in my 3 year old Grandson's size so they ordered them for home delivery free of charge so I didn't need to make the 10 mile journey back to the shop. Delivery was speedy. I know I can trust Clarks for service, fit and durability as I wear nothing else myself and I'm 60+.

  • 3 stars out of 5Peeling 'leather' problems

I too purchased these shoes for my Son, I agree they are easy to clean but have had to buy another pair, even though not out-grown, as the peeling around the ankle has left them looking 'scrappy'. We polish the shoes nearly everyday but there is no going back once the ankle starts to peel. The choice of 'smart' school shoes isn't great, we don't like the trainer types so we will stick with this design until we find an alternative. Feedback from Clarks: Thank you for getting in touch. It’s difficult to know why some children’s shoes scuff more readily than others, however, we all use our feet in different ways and this will have an impact in the type of wear they receive. We do recommend shoe care items that help reduce the appearance of scuffs and scrapes, so it is unusual this has not helped. Please return to the store with your shoes and the shoe polish so that the manager can have talk through ways to improve the appearance of the shoes with you. We will happily refund or replace any items deemed as faulty.

  • 2 stars out of 5Nice but don't last long

I loved these shoes which my mom bought as a present for my little boy when he started school last september. However within a couple of weeks they were looking rather scruffy and even with polishing it doesnt help. Fast forward 5 months and they start getting holes in the soles. This was my biggest dissapointment as I would expect a make like Clarks to be near indestructable - I have paid £10 for shoes from the supermarket which have lasted longer!! I don't think these shoes are made with 5 year old boys in mind as they obviously can't stand the usage. Feedback from Clarks: We are very proud of the quality of our products and to ensure this all our new designs and materials are tested before they go on sale.  If you are disappointed with any of our products please return to a store with your receipt so a member of staff can investigate.

  • 4 stars out of 5Lovely shoes but....

    NICHOLA from eastbourne

Completely agree with the other reviews about the man made collar of the shoe being very poor. Both my boys wear these shoes as they are the only ones I have found that look nice and smart, not like all the hideous trainer type shoes. They were perfect until the addition of the man made collar, I do hope that wasn't a cynical ploy by Clarks to make us by more shoes! Of course this part of the shoe gets lots of wear as children shove their feet in with all the grace of an elephant! So inevitably with the collar not being leather it wears away. Please Clarks return these shoes to being an all leather upper and you'll get your 5 stars back! Feedback from Clarks: Thanks for leaving a review; we value all our customer feedback so thank you for your comments which have been fed back to our team.

originally we bought some cheap shoes for around ten pounds they only lasted five minutes. We then bought these shoes from clarks in a mothercare store in Manchester. Ok they are more expensive but the quality is excellent, they have lasted the whole term for my son who is football mad. so you can guess how much stick the shoes took.

    Jennifer from wigan

We purchased a pair of these shoes for my son. However despite polishing every day the leather is peeling away in parts and they are starting to look quite scruffy. No other faults with them but I would have expected better quality for the price. Feedback from Clarks: We’re sorry to hear you’re unhappy with your purchase. june from benfleet

I always buy Clarks shoes for my grandsons. This is the first time I have been very disappointed with the quality. I bought these in January and had to take them off him last week, as he arrived in school in a lot of discomfort. For a couple of weeks the leather has been peeling off the top of the shoe despite regular cleaning and last week the tongue had an exposed rough area which chafed the top of the foot. The shoe is now useless and cannot be worn. A very disappointing result for the price. Feedback from Clarks: We’re sorry to hear you’re unhappy with your purchase. We do thoroughly test all our products before they go on sale, so the issue you describe seems unusual. Really really pleased with these shoes, this is the second pair I have bought, my ds last pair lasted for 14months of constant wear (he's feet don't grow very fast!) That is pretty good going for a pair of boys school shoes when you consider what boys are like!

    Nikki from chelmsford

These shoes are really good quality. They polish up wonderfully and look as new as the day we got them (five months later). The velcro is also the right length (I do find that it can be a bit long on some shoes) and they are super smart. Highly recommended. It's just a shame my son's feet have grown and I need to buy a new pair! Will be buying these same shoes again for sure!

This is the second pair of shoes that we have purchased in this style. We switched to another make last time and I wish we hadn't! This shoe outlasts every other type that I have tried for my son and despite the front having no additional toe protection it doesn't get scuffed. Well done Clark's.

  • 4 stars out of 5Good Shoes, but probably more suited to older kids.

I brought these shoes for my son as his first pair of school shoes. Chosen Firstly because they look like proper school shoes and not like the trainers types as so many school shoes are made to look like these day. Plus the quality was good too, good old fashioned leather and not that horrid plastic type cheap stuff which I noted many shoes seem to be made of for school nowadays (what ever happened to companies making good quality shoes like in the old days), so good on Clarks for trying to keep to tradition. I know people want cheap stuff, but I myself would rather pay just that little extra for quality that will last a good deal longer. The plus side, these shoes give lots of room and space for growing feet (no rub marks noted on ankles toes or heels), so long as they are regularly kept polished with the proper waxed polish (and not those shiny silicone impregnated sponges that you can get for the quick clean) keeps the leather nice and soft and shiny and in good nick, keeping them looking like new. They also have a good base which stand up to the wear and tear of a child. The downside to this however is it makes the leather more susceptible to damage with the rough and tumble that comes to younger kids and found that early on scuffing occurred in the toe area's of the shoe and over a good amount of time the toe area kicked to the point of no return. My example for this is I think my son (who is 5yrs) must sit on the right side of the class room desk and must constantly kick the leg of the chair/table throughout the day as the toe part has been damaged right the way through the leather to the point I now have to invest in a new pair of shoes. So I can honestly say, these shoes have definitely had a good kicking over the last 8-9 months hence why I believe these shoes would be more suited to the older boy. Overall a good shoe if looked after well. And good on Clarks for keeping to some tradition to smart leather school shoes. :)

  • 5 stars out of 5First school shoes!

I took my son into town at the end of the summer to purchase his very first school shoes for his first steps into reception! Unluckily for my son he has very wide feet and a very high instep! This was no problem for the fantastically helpful sales assistant who firstly was brilliant at keeping my rather fidgety boys' attention but also immediately knew the most appropriate shoes for him. Although the width he needed wasn't available in store she swiftly took us to the counter and we ordered the correct pair which were then delivered free of charge to our house a couple of days later!. My son was over the moon and contrary to his usual behaviour he delights in putting them on himself every morning! Thank you Clarks!!

    Sanchia from colchester

I brought these for my 4 yrs then, 5 yr old now, son last September 2010 and am so impressed with the fact that they havent worn out, scuffed much (after polished didnt even notice). He is so boisterous and into everything they have taken quite a battering but he has simply just grown out of them !!! Especially as he wears them every day aswell as a couple of weddings & parties with trousers and to be honest I am so impressed I am going to buy him the next size up of the same shoe as he loves them. I have also made my 15yr son have some Clarks shoes this year from the sale absolute bargain. I'd like to say I also buy clarks for my 11yr old daughter also. I am also now going to pass the too small shoes on to my friend's boy who is equally boysterious and action packed and into everything - FANTASTIC shoes BEST BUY I have ever had.

  • 5 stars out of 5Fantastic hard wearing shoe

    Karen from henlow

My 4.5 year old son is really hard on his shoes, scuffing the toes so badly that the leather thins quite noticeably!! This is the only style that we have found that last him until the next shoe size increase hence this is the 3rd pair of Deaton shoes he has worn. They polish up well even over all the deep scuffing. Also my son requires Clarks widest width size of H and thankfully Deaton is made in this size for him. The velcro is a good length and lasts the entire life of the shoe. We will definitely be buying these same shoes again in the future! Highly recommended.

  • 1 stars out of 5extremely dissappointed

Having bought a similar style several times over for my boys, I have to say that I am not at all happy with the updated version. As other reviewers have said, the material round the ankle has peeled off, looks unsightly, scruffy and not at all what I expect from Clarks. My shop wouldnt take them back as I couldn't find the receipt some 6 weeks later! I expect Clarks shoes to be better quality and more long lasting than this. Feedback from Clarks: We’re sorry to hear you’re unhappy with your purchase. We're very proud of the quality of our footwear and we thoroughly test all our products before they go on sale. Please send your shoes to our head office so we can assess their condition along with any bank or credit card statement and please obtain proof of postage. • 5 stars out of 5Excellent...We are onto our second pair!

    Claire from london

These shoes are very smart, sturdy and well designed. I like the double strap as the lower strap keeps the shoe well fitted. It doesn't need to be undone and makes the shoe adjust well to the foot. If the top strap becomes less sticky, the shoe still stays in place... unlike many of the one strap shoes. As the mum of an older child, I note the other reviews criticizing these shoes for scuffed toes very quickly. I have had many pairs/makes of shoes on my son and the culprit is the wearer, not the shoe. Little boys spend a lot of time on their hands and knees in the playground, on play equipment, playing football etc...and are very tough on their shoes. These stand up as well as any and polish up well.

This is the second pair of shoes in this style my son has had. They lasted one school year last year and still looked smart at the end of the year (obviously with regular polishing). They are comfortable and easy for him to get on and off. The velcro strap lasted the whole year as well which surprised me when I first bought them. I would strongly recommend this style to carers/parents of any active 6-8 year old boys.

  • 5 stars out of 5Excellent first school shoes

I bought these for my son back in March when he started nursery. He's 3, I wasn't expecting them to last 5 minutes as he's a big fan of outdoor play (bikes, football, water!) I've been very pleasantly surprised, and I am pleased to say they've easily lasted until the end of term. He often comes home with them scuffed, but they polish up as good as new. I'm hoping they're still for sale in September, because they are undoubtably the smartest school shoes available for his age (I'm not a fan of trainer style school shoes!)

I bought these shoes for my son's first year at school (Sept 2011 - June 2012). I must be honest and say that I did not experience any of the the problems with the trim that other reviewers mentioned. The shoes did come home dirty and scuffed after the usual playground behaviour but once they were cleaned and polished, they came up as good as new. I am so impressed with Clarks school shoes that I will be returning again for this term's shoes. I believe the shoes are excellent value for money as they survived the entire school term.

I bought my shoes at John Lewis Clarks. My son started school on the 4th of september 2013. The shoes even though polished are showing signs of being very scuffed and look very old considering that he has only worn them for 14 days. However he is very satisfied with the fit hence the 3 stars rather than 2. Feedback from Clarks: Thanks for your comments. We do recommend shoe care items that help reduce the appearance of scuffs and scrapes. If you go into one of our stores, they will be more than happy to advise you on our products that should help.

I bought these for my son as his 1st school shoes last September. I am so glad he only has 4 days left to wear them! Within the 1st week they were scuffed and the trim at the top of the shoe started peeling after a few weeks. It is now completely off & they look very scruffy, despite twice weekly polishing. I bought Clarks for the quality but these have been a disappointment & I will look else where in the future. Feedback from Clarks: Thank you for getting in touch. It’s difficult to know why some children’s shoes scuff more readily than others, however, we all use our feet in different ways and this will have an impact in the type of wear they receive. If a shoe is faulty we will happily refund or replace them.

The padding on the ankle is no longer leather or even imitation leather but is sort of a brushed effect and cheapens the look of the shoe. Again the quality looks to be less than previous years I would rather pay slightly more and keep the quality the same as the shoes have been the same price for the last 3 years but the quality has dropped considerably since the the days when they were the morcambe design and they lasted the whole school year. I am seriously doubtful these will last until Christmas. But they are the only design that fits my sons feet
